This statement (300 words or less) could include qualifications, convictions, thoughts on issues, concerns, etc.

In 2012 I was delegate to General Conference. I returned with no desire to go back. The backroom political wrangling, the institutional protectionism at the expense of Christ centered, evangelical, missional purpose, and the inability to enact significant structural change needed to revitalize and redirect us, left me disappointed, even disillusioned with our denomination. But, seven years removed and six years back from the cabinet into a wonderful local congregation, I still love the UMC that has been my home from birth.
For good or bad we are being forced to reinvent our church or see it implode. I am in favor of some revised version of the Connectional Conference Plan that can keep us all under an umbrella of United Methodism, but create adequate separation for traditionals and progressives to move forward without energy wasting arguments about who is right and struggles for power. And in the process to restructure and right-size our General Boards and agencies with a focus on the local church as the main disciple making body. Wesley's sermon "The Catholic Spirit" laid the groundwork for the Methodist motto, "In essential unity, in non-essential liberty, in all things charity". While it can be fairly argued what is essential to salvation, it is my hope we can find a way to continue that tradition of sharing in Kingdom work in spite of our differences. If we can accomplish that, and my experience in the local church and cabinet can be helpful towards that end, I would be honored to serve the South Georgia delegation.
