Statement

This statement (300 words or less) could include qualifications, convictions, thoughts on issues, concerns, etc.

I’m Robert Beckum, and I am pretty sure that most everyone knows me and the positions for which I have stood over some forty years in South Georgia, an evangelical traditionalist throughout my ministry. I have served as a delegate to four previous General Conferences, and in this service, I have learned a lot about the function and dysfunction of the United Methodist Church at the General level. I believe my experience can be helpful in seeking to lead a way forward for our Annual Conference in 2020.
I am most excited that Wesleyan Movement offers the exciting possibility of a newly emerging connection for ministry and mission as an alternative to the political paralysis that is the United Methodist Church on a General level. 13 General Conferences over 48 years is more than enough time for debate over our differences concerning issues of human sexuality and practice. I fully support the current language of our Book of Discipline. I more fully support new missional networks strengthening the body of Christ.
We must recover our God-given identity, informed more by Christ’s presence than cultural pressures. As a result of that recovered identity, we must allow the Holy Spirit to kindle anew in us God’s passion for the redemption of the world.
I am committed to a truly faithful church and plan to be active in its leadership to 2024 and beyond. As we move forward, I am committed to speak the truth in love and, for the sake of Christ, I am committed to not making enemies or casualties of those with whom I disagree.
I believe it is time to move forward with a plan of separation in order to move out of our current impasse and to embrace the mission of God in the world.
